On the eastern shore of Shadow Lake, in Vermont's most unhurried corner, a house sits with its back to the world and its face to the water. The design draws from two quiet traditions — Scandinavian and Japanese — letting them settle into each other the way old things do: without announcement. Curated pieces from the 1970s and '80s give the rooms a warmth that purely designed spaces rarely manage. Every room looks out over the lake. The fireplace does the rest.

Two king bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, and the kind of stillness the Northeast Kingdom does better than almost anywhere. Hiking, skiing, and local craft food are close. The lake is closer.
