New Tradition
Higashi Chaya District, Kanazawa
In Japan's most quietly radical city — where contemporary art and Edo-era streetscapes share the same block — a century-old machiya has been restored into a private residence for two. The concept is precise: tradition does not endure through preservation alone, but through the hands of those who carry it forward. An earthen Toriniwa corridor runs from entrance to garden, reimagined as a gallery where works by local artisans rest within reach. Upstairs, two bedrooms in muted tones, a small library, a dining table surfaced in large-format washi — matte, distinctive, unmistakably its own.
The Higashi Chaya District took shape two centuries ago and remains one of the few places where Edo aesthetics and everyday life still genuinely overlap. Kanazawa's 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art anchors a citywide culture of creation just beyond the door. Here, the old is carefully held while new expression arrives without announcement. That is, precisely, the point.
