Santa Clara 1728

Lisbon, Portugal

Built in 1728 and restored by architect Manuel Aires Mateus, this six-suite house sits on Campo de Santa Clara — one of Lisbon's most storied squares, ringed by palaces, monuments, and open views over the Tagus. The renovation honors the building's age without being precious about it: generous windows were designed to catch the city's particular quality of light as it moves across the rooftops and river below, and a secluded inner garden offers the kind of quiet that Lisbon rarely surrenders. A communal dining table anchors the ground floor, where guests gather, share meals, and fall into the rhythms of the house.

The six suites come in two sizes. Suite Santa Clara (~70m²) offers a king bed with river views, a sitting area with sofa bed, and a bathroom that looks onto the garden — generous enough for two adults and two children. Suite Tejo (~50m²) is more intimate: a king bed, river views, and a private bathroom for two. Breakfast and daily housekeeping included. Minimum two-night stay.
