Off Grid

Alta Garrotxa, Catalonia

There are places that don't ask anything of you — and then there are places that quietly ask everything. Off Grid Girona, a restored 17th-century masia at the foot of the Alta Garrotxa, is the second kind. Set within mainland Spain's largest volcanic landscape, ancient forest pressing in from every side, this is a house that runs on spring water, solar energy, and the particular rhythm of people who have chosen to slow down on purpose. Limewash walls, hand-cut La Bisbal tiles, reclaimed wood — the interiors were drawn from the land itself, restored in collaboration with Girona-based designer Ariadna Puigdomenech with nothing superfluous and nothing missing.

Evenings gather at the communal table by the pool, where the resident chef serves a daily-changing menu, family-style, built entirely around what's local and what's in season. There are honesty bars, wildflower gardens, a garden studio for yoga and workshops, and a fully equipped bike garage for those heading out onto the Garrotxa's gravel routes. It doesn't pretend to be a hotel. It is, as its founder intended, something slower.
