Hôtel Massé
Pigalle, Paris 9e
On a quiet street in SoPi — the 9th arrondissement's creative quarter, a few steps from the Rue des Martyrs and the pulse of Pigalle — Hôtel Massé occupies a Haussmann building that feels genuinely of its neighborhood. The 40 rooms run along corridors with lacquered bordeaux walls and low light, each one distinct: some with mansard ceilings, some with zinc rooftop views, some with a balcony, some with a freestanding bath open to the room. The materials are pared back — pine, okoumé, lambris, a beige carpet underfoot — and the warmth comes instead from 1970s furniture and Ingo Maurer bedside lamps. In each bathroom, a hand-painted tile by artist Héloïse Rival nods, with a certain wit, to the 9th's storied reputation.
This is a family project, and it shows in the detail: pastries from Pain Retrouvé, artisanal soaps from Marseille's Foufour, commissioned art on the walls, and Le Trente — the ground floor bar where travelers and Parisians share small plates and lose track of time. A place to live Paris as a local, for a few days at least.
