Callemant d'Autane

Visan, Provence

A 17th-century hôtel particulier on Visan's Rue des Nobles, in the Vaucluse's Enclave des Papes — a pocket of Provence shaped by Templar history, Côtes du Rhône vineyards, truffle woods, and lavender fields that stretch to the horizon. The house has been luxuriously reimagined by Paris-based, AD100-celebrated Peruvian designer Diego Delgado-Elias: floor-to-ceiling tapestries, carved woodwork, glittering chandeliers, gilded library spines, a banquet hall lit by sconces, and a grand entrance staircase that announces, quietly, that you are somewhere particular. A secret spiral staircase leads to a tower bedroom. A 4th-century Roman road runs through the enclosed garden, past citrus trees and 17th-century stone urns, toward a pool with views of Mont Ventoux.

The surrounding country rewards the unhurried — truffle markets at Richerenches, the château at Grignan, the sawtoothed limestone of Les Dentelles de Montmirail, and some of the Rhône Valley's finest wine within cycling distance. Avignon airport is 30 minutes away, though once arrived, there is little reason to leave.
