Monte Uzulu

A project of Taller LU’UM, the quaint boutique hotel Monte Uzulu opened its doors to guests in 2019.

Nestled between the hills of the small fishing and surf town, San Agustinillo, Monte Uzulu was designed with the surrounding nature in mind. The structure itself utilizes hardwood detailing for both doors and furniture, cement walls stained with earthen pigments, a palapa palm roof, as well as water catchment, greywater and bio digestor systems. During construction, many of the trees in the thousand-year-old forest of the property were left standing, including several iconic Pochote trees.

Taller LU’UM is a Mexico-based creative project that bridges contemporary designers and traditional local artisan communities to produce interior design objects. During this particular project, they collaborated with 4 groups of artisans, as well as Mariana Ruíz from AT-TE for the architecture and project management, Paola José from Sombra for the unique light fixtures, Valentina Deffis for the finishes, Tiago Pinto de Carvalho for the conceptual project, Templo Oaxaca for the biodigesters, and Edgar Ludert for all of the branding. Together, there is an effortless symbiosis in the clean, natural design.

Each of the hotel’s 11 suites includes a terrace that opens to views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding forest, allowing the sound of the ocean to lull guests to sleep at night. The open, sky-lit showers and bathtubs are nestled in a tropical landscape, and the high-quality bathroom products are non-harmful to the environment. The hotel’s restaurant, La Temporada, offers a rotating menu using all organic ingredients sourced from local farmers and fishermen.

While in San Agustinillo, don’t miss: dinner at La Temporada, surf lessons at the beach, sunset hike at nearby Punta Cometa, sunrise walk at nearby Mermejita beach, and tacos at Tribu in Mazunte. If you’ve got extra time, drive 1.5 hours to visit Casa Wabi.
