Monte Uzulu

A project of Taller LU’UM, the quaint boutique hotel Monte Uzulu opened its doors to guests in 2019.

Nestled between the hills of the small fishing and surf town, San Agustinillo, Monte Uzulu was designed with the surrounding nature in mind. The structure itself utilizes hardwood detailing for both doors and furniture, cement walls stained with earthen pigments, a palapa palm roof, as well as water catchment, greywater and bio digestor systems. A refuge in Oaxaca, that combines colonial tradition, art, and contemporary design. Everything revolves around a large central patio, a home for indigenous plants, and an antique magical fountain, in which the contemporary perspective of Oaxaca coexists with strong original architectural elements such as vaulted ceilings, ancient pillars, and walls that have been treated like real canvases, following the ancestral processes of painting and tiling.

Le Chacuel’s furniture was designed with the ethereal in mind—not to obstruct the space, but rather to let light pass through it. The spaces are wide-open and the trusses exposed to give the room an expansive, clean and modern feel.
