Amba Khadi Cotton Robe
Amba Khadi Cotton Robe
This is effortless - wear three ways - open, as a wrap, or closed in the middle. With handmade details such as tassels with glass beads, the cotton feel of this gives it a down to earth feel. Handwoven by female artisans and dyed with natural dyes, this fabric is soft & special. You’ll feel at home wearing this, whether to the beach or over jeans, it has a soft and familiar feeling. The fabric is slightly gauzy. This is woven in the khadi style of weaving, where the fibre are hand-spun then hand-woven by an NGO that specializes in training marginalized women, creating rural employment opportunities at multiple stages along the supply chain. Khadi fibre have a slightly rough feel while being undeniably soft and cozy.
About the Designer
SUPERNATURAE is a love story of travel, artisanal textiles and craft production, founded by Benedicte Lux. It began as a research project in Morocco and has travelled through London and New York before taking its current incarnation, a project centered around artisanal anthropology.
Supernaturae partners with one of the oldest textile NGOs in West Bengal and produces entirely in small villages where craft work is often the only local source of income. We develop on the ground, using locally available materials and traditional craft techniques with our artisans.
Each season we design loungewear for a traveling muse. We use the softest (and best!) quality materials to design with a global wanderer in mind. We use handwoven organic cotton, handwoven silks, and kantha stitch as embroidery.
We are proud to say we have fair trade certification through our producers, who are founding members of the World Fair Trade Organization.
This particular fabric was woven by an NGO that specializes in training marginalized women to take up spinning, dyeing and weaving. The fabric is woven on old looms in rural Madya Pradesh according to traditional methods but with a very new visual feel and colour. Our work is fair trade certified and we have a commitment to supporting women’s development groups. Our supply chain has been created to create rural employment opportunities while showcasing the best of artisanal craft.
