How to make a Palm Hat with Vianca Soleil

Vianca Soleil Roquero, the creative soul behind one of our favorite Instagram accounts, lives a true island life in Romblon, Philippines. Slow and peaceful, her home has truly a Hôtel Weekend spirit. During quarantine times, she is lucky to live in an isolated land by the sea, so we asked Vianca to show us a mini tutorial of what you can do with nature around you, like a palm leaf.

You don’t have to live on an island to have a palm tree nearby, so take a look at your surroundings! We hope you can enjoy this project while you listen to some Caribbean sounds and daydream of an island escape, soon.

Find a palm leaf

Ideally a young palm leaf so it’s easy to bend

You will need a string and any cutting tool

Measure your head and add 5-7cm allowance

Split

Peel some off so it’s easier to bend

Tie ends together…

…to make a circle

Go over & Under, like a braid…

…over & Under until you finish the circle

It’s finished

Now loop every leaf one more time

… so it covers the brim later on

Go under, over, under…

& under, over, under..

Tighten

Open top hat is more or less finished, once you figure out the basic steps…

… you can just play around with it to change its shape, like tie it at the top like this! Such a cute option

We will keep it simple and cut the excess part of the leaves at the top..

… and the bottom

& that’s it!
