A day in Madrid with Zubi designers Elena & Mercedes
Born & raised in Madrid, the Zubizarreta sisters founded their brand, Zubi, in 2012. The travel-inspired bags & accessories are printed with original photos of their trips around the world. Every piece is unique and each bag tells a new story. The pouches, backpacks and shoulder bags are named with the place where the photograph was taken, along with their GPS cords.
Meet Elena & Mercedes, our guides to the best of the Spanish capital, Madrid.
Madrid, 9 am. Where should we wake up?
We would rent a private house at El Viso, an exclusive neighbourhood in the North of the city.
10 am. Time for brunch, where should we go?
You should try Federal (Plaza de las Comendadoras, 9), or head to Roll (Calle Amaniel, 23) for a fantastic american brunch in the area of Conde Duque. We love the Benedict eggs!
11:30 am. Photography is an essential part of your brand's inspiration and concept. Where should photography-lovers go?
They should go to Prado Museum, Thyssen, Botánico, Retiro, Fundación la Caixa, la Central, Tellow Korner, Max Estrella gallery... The list never ends, but this are certainly the must-go's!
12:30 am and it's time for some light shopping. Where to?
Our store should be your first stop! It's located in Zurbano 22. After this, head to Do design at Fernando VI, visit Pez store too, which is next to it. If you're looking for the perfect gift, maybe buy some books at Panta Rhei or Ivory Press, and flowers at Sally Hambleton. For the art lovers, if you want to frame your original art or some prints go to Heredero de Crispín. Our favorite stationary store is La Eriza for notebooks and La Riva for high quality papers.
When you're not at the Zubi office designing or taking pictures, we could find you at...
You could find Mercedes at a comic store or at a rock concert. Elena probably would be at a animal store buying cute things for her cat, Pisco Sour.
A place that feels like home?
Photos via AD here.
A cool store or space where you would love to place a Zubi poster?
The dream would be to frame it beautifully and place it at Club Matador (Calle de Jorge Juan, 5), it's one of the most amazing places in Madrid.
2 pm. Let's grab a bite!
We adore Fismuler (Calle de Sagasta, 29) for its originality, and Chuka Ramen (Calle Echegaray, 9) because we simply love ramen. We are also fans of Olivia Te Cuida and Magasand, it's our go-to for healthy eating.
3 pm. The best, must-try sweets & desserts in the city are..
For desserts, head to Mallorca, the torteles are our childhood faves. La Duquesita y Celicioso (a gluten free bakery) are also a great fix for the never-ending dessert cravings.
4 pm, the day is perfect for a picnic in the city. Where do we lay our blanket?
At the Parque del Oeste for sure. It's wilder that El Retiro, and so beautiful. Grab a basket full of bocadillitos from Mallorca, Poncelet cheeses and a good Lavinia wine.
Best streets to stroll around with our Zubi bag?
Fernando Vi, Zurbano, Parque del Retiro, Serrano, Gran Vía... and all around Madrid!
9 pm. Where do you go to have dinner with girlfriends?
We usually go to Madrid's classics such as La Parra (Calle del Monte Esquinza, 34), or to a terrace to grab a beer and some tapas.
11 pm. And for drinks?
Macera is fantastic. We also like Hermosos y Malditos, but honestly, we prefer to stay at the same place we had dinner, we don't party a lot!
