Checking in to Thirty Seven Hotel in Gozo
To me, nothing is more exciting than finding a hidden gem that takes a trip to the next level. There are small things that take a holiday from good to perfect. And perfect it was….my experience at Thirty Seven Hotel in Gozo, Malta.
I never had Malta in my bucket list, I always knew it was there, but I never did the proper research or plans to travel to this idillic island. And I was so wrong.
Every day, I spend hours researching new hotels and beautiful places all around the globe. Luckily, and after a lot of investigation, I landed into this gorgeous hotel in Gozo, the sister Island of Malta. I featured it on the hotel hot-spots, but I felt like it was calling my name. I got in contact with the hotel, booked my room and quickly bought my flight.
Thirty Seven is owned by Patti & Giuseppe, both from Milan, who after many years got bored of the fashion industry and the rhythm of the big city and decided to live a more peaceful life. Two decades ago, they bought a 400-year-old, gorgeous rustic farmhouse in the little town of Munxar and reconstructed it little by little. Now, the house is fully transformed into a luxurious retreat, while keeping the authenticity and charme of the original building.
MY CHECK -IN EXPERIENCE
Staying at Thirty Seven was magical. I drove from Malta airport to Gozo for almost two hours through the sunflower fields, deserted landscapes filled with cacti, flowers & the sea on one side. I arrived Saturday morning after a very crazy start of the day - a delayed flight, getting lost in tiny streets with unpronounceable names, and I crashed the rental car …twice! However, as soon as I stepped into the beautiful hotel I felt that all of the troubles I had in the morning completely disappeared.
37 is located in the tiny Gozitan village of Munxar. To get there, the best way is to rent a car at the Malta airport, drive to the Gozo Ferry station while enjoying beautiful views on the road. When you get to Gozo, drive for other 15 minutes and you are there! They also offer a door to door pick up service from the airport which makes everything easier, but it is better to have a car to explore the Island.
The rooms are clean & contemporary, but at the same time, they are respectful of the traditional building design. My room had two private balconies: one with two white sun beds surrounded by plants and another one with coral coloured hammock made for naps under the sun... or moonlight. I stayed in the Tokyo suite, which was spectacular.
Every inch of the space is meant to be relaxing and luxurious yet simple (as best things in life are!). 37 is warm, sunny, with a homey feeling.. pure laid-back luxury.
Worth a special mention is the food. The owner, Patti, likes to prepare breakfast herself. The breakfast was full of fresh fruit and juice, and healthy choices like gluten free granola and cereals. For snacks, I enjoyed a freshly squeezed orange juice with chips. You can also have dinner or lunch prepared specially for you if you ask before hand. Another thing I loved is that they are very earth-conscious, so they kindly ask their guests to save water when showering, turn off the AC if you’re not using it..
In Gozo the sun always shines. The sea is turquoise and emerald green, crystal clear, simply magical. The Island is covered by cacti, exotic flowers, sunflowers, but most of all, the nicest people I’ve ever met. Everyone in Gozo is kind, happy, helpful and lovely.
A must-do is to visit the Blue Lagoon. Giuseppe took me on his boat to see the local bays & beautiful grotas, where I swam with fishes under the most gorgeous emerald green sea. On the boat, Giuseppe tells me why he moved from Milan, all of his travels around the globe, and about the time where Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt stayed at 37 with their kids, when filming "By the sea".
To eat, make a reservation at Ta Karolina in Xlendi beach (ask for a table over the sea, on the dock, so you can eat with the sea inches away from you). I spent hours relaxing at Xlendi beach, which is only 15 minutes away from the hotel by walking and 5 min if you are driving. At Xlendi, look for the trampoline, jump, sun bathe, read a book, and enjoy life a different, slower and quieter way.
